About This Service

What is an Upper GI Endoscopy?

Upper GI Endoscopy, also known as Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a diagnostic procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It allows doctors to view the lining of the upper digestive tract in real time and identify abnormalities that may not be visible on imaging tests alone.

This procedure is commonly recommended for patients with persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, or suspected ulcers and tumors. During the procedure, tissue samples (biopsies) can also be collected, and certain conditions such as bleeding or small polyps may be treated immediately.

Benefits
  • Provides a detailed examination of the upper digestive tract
  • Detects ulcers, gastritis, acid reflux, and esophageal disorders
  • Identifies polyps, tumors, and sources of gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Allows biopsy for accurate diagnosis
  • Helps diagnose persistent abdominal pain and swallowing difficulties
  • Enables certain therapeutic procedures during the same examination
  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery
  • Supports early diagnosis and effective treatment planning
